If Letter To You, Bruce Springsteen’s twentieth studio album, was the sort of cinematic end-scene it sounds like, it’d feature our hero gazing up at a neon sign reading ‘Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas’, having an unspoken inner epiphany, climbing back on his motorbike and roaring away in the direction of New Jersey. Last year’s Western Stars saw him single … Although the LP doesn’t sport the same youthful urgency as the recordings he cut in the Seventies and Eighties — there’s no “Badlands” or “Cover Me” here — you can hear how the anger and depression of his tougher times and his many split personalities delivered him to stability, and the most fascinating parts of Letter to You are when he comes out of the shadows to admit that he realizes it, too. So much of his music has been about learning to live with the setbacks his characters cannot change; this is the sound of Springsteen accepting that for himself. House of a Thousand Guitars is a killer composition where “the bitter and the bored wake in search of the lost chord”, laced with knowing sadness that no such place exists outside a Springsteen gig. This update turns a nuanced portrait of a love hexagon into a mid-paced thumper, sacrificing the song’s sexual intimacy for a piano- and harmonica-laced singalong. Thanks to a guitar unexpectedly given to him by “an Italian kid” at the theatre stage door, more songs began to pour out of Springsteen: songs about being in a band, about absent friends and snake oil salesmen. The ‘you’ in the title is multi-layered, too. These are songs that demand real-world action; perhaps Springsteen doesn’t believe he can leave everything up to the power of prayer. Rainmaker rips into Trump, but with a superb allegory about “unloading buckshot into low clouds” during a drought. With no prospect of mass live entertainment returning soon, the E Street Band will have to sit on their hands instead of touring. Letter to You comes quickly on the heels of Western Stars, a long-gestating 2019 immersion into the lush, progressive country vistas of the early 1970s, but in a sense, it's a true sequel to Bruce Springsteen's 2016 memoir Born to Run and its 2017 stage companion Springsteen on Broadway. It's an album where Springsteen reckons with the weight of the past, how its ghosts are still … Recorded in just a few days with the E Street Band, this is one of the most personal statements of Springsteen’s career, With the E Street Band backing him, Bruce Springsteen attempts to make sense of the past on his new album, 'Letter to You.'. In between, there’s another train, this one burning, and a song about love, The Power of Prayer, whose belief in “a pair of hearts” going all-in is a whisker off self-parody. Recorded live in the studio in four days (with only five booked to begin with) there’s an urgency here that, while not exactly missing from his more recent albums, certainly feels renewed. The powerful title track distils the essence of Springsteen messaging down the ages. It also, importantly, demonstrates the band’s unacknowledged flexibility. Bruce Springsteen's new album Letter to You is out on the same day. He recorded the album in just five days, live in the studio with the E Street Band. The album opens with a flurry of blatant signposts pointing backward — a downbound train flattening a penny he left on the tracks, a “river running along the edge of town” — and the refrain “One minute you’re here, next minute you’re gone.” The music is somber, built on acoustic guitars and synthy strings, and his voice sounds pensive as he confesses, “Baby, baby, baby, I’m so alone/Baby, baby, baby, I’m coming home,” possibly to the ghosts of Clarence Clemons, George Theiss of his Sixties band the Castiles, or maybe even himself. Inside this feelgood bubble, there are only brief nods to US politics. It’s an album with several levels of Bruce Springsteen working through different dreams from different times, all in concert. So w… Music On Bruce Springsteen’s New Album, the Boss Reflects on the Boss But Letter to You is more than just another trip back through his glory days. Over the past half a century, Bruce Springsteen has played down-on-their-luck working men, wide-eyed youngsters growing up too quickly, local-circuit rockers who can only dream of playing stadiums, Cadillac ranchers tearin’ up the highway for cheap kicks, and on and on in his songs. Reviews \ Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You Is a Prayer of Strength and Resilience in the Face of Death For his outstanding 20th album, the Boss … Letter To You‘s title track is a paean to lessons learnt and life’s scars worn with a degree of pride. It was all recorded live, except for the odd overdub; it took four days and one to listen back. “Letter to You,” his new album with the E Street Band, is built on lessons and skills accumulated in the past. It might not be the dernier cri, but from the Killers via War on Drugs, to Lana Del Rey and, previously, Celtic punks the Gaslight Anthem and the Hold Steady, Springsteen’s stock has steadily risen among much younger musicians. Stylistically, they’re very different from the confessional nature of the rest of Letter to You, but since they’re still Springsteen songs and the E Street Band is playing them live, just as they did nearly 50 years ago, they never feel out of place. In between all the self-therapy, Springsteen prays. On one level, Letter to You is utterly the wrong album for right now. Letter to You isn’t exactly classic Springsteen, and it isn’t even the best studio album he’s made in the last decade—though I know most don’t share my affinity for 2012’s Wrecking Ball. Bruce Springsteen’s acclaimed 18 months at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway felt like an overwhelming career summation, and may even have had the sense of an ending. This, however, is not at all how this man operates. The result is Letter to You, a distillation of the elixir of E Street: a thumping, sentimental, full-court press of unabashed vigour, designed to frappé stadiums. Letter to You isn’t boring either; in fact, I’m tempted to say that it’s Springsteen’s finest studio album of the millennium. Conversely, then, Letter to You is exactly the album some people could use right now, a sledgehammer of succour and uplift, a heroic E Street pile-on of the kind fans and guitarist Steve Van Zandt have been lobbying for, for years. But the Boss is focused on where he stands now — and where he’s going next. I posted my complete album review of the “Letter to You” last week but now, to celebrate its release, I’m breaking down each of the album’s 12 tracks and ranking them best to worst. A church organ runs through “House of a Thousand Guitars,” as he delivers a sermon about the healing power of rock & roll: “Here, the bitter and the bored wake in search of the lost chord that’ll band us together … in the house of a thousand guitars.” These are the same thousand guitars Springsteen summoned by name on Magic’s “Radio Nowhere,” the spirit of which goes back to the guitar he taught to talk on “Thunder Road.” And on Letter to You’s “The Power of Prayer,” a lilting, gentle rocker, he praises Ben E. King and the Drifters’ “This Magic Moment” as an answered prayer and exclaims, “I’m reachin’ for heaven, we’ll make it there,” to his lover (probably someone like Wendy from “Born to Run”). The ‘you’ in the title is multi-layered, too. Recently, just before Trump’s Pennsylvania rally, Springsteen’s Streets of Philadelphia soundtracked an anti-Trump ad by author Don Wilmslow. Another, Janey Needs a Shooter nearly made it on to several Springsteen 70s albums. Springsteen turned 71 last month, and his 20th studio album, Letter to You, indulges in his past like never before. Released 23 October 2020 on Columbia. The tracks “ If I Was the Priest”, “ Janey Needs a Shooter”, and “ Song For Orphans” were written by a 20-something Springsteen whose skepticism towards sentimentality and nostalgia governed much of his writing. “Song for Orphans” is a madcap, country-rock retelling of history’s losers — the Axis losing its grip, the Confederacy giving up — as he sings cleverly of sons in search of fathers “but their fathers are all gone.” Meanwhile, “If I Was the Priest” is a sacrilegious tale of devolution where the Virgin Mary gives out personally blessed balloons and Jesus wears a buckskin jacket, and “Janey Needs a Shooter,” with all its gospel organ and harmonica glory accompanying a bizarre story about predatory doctors, priests, and cops while Springsteen plays guardian angel to a vulnerable girl. Released 23 October 2020 on Columbia. He similarly grapples with mortality on “Last Man Standing,” looking at faded pictures of “when you were hard and young and proud … running raw and loud,” and name-checking gigs he played at Jersey Shore dives — all with the punchline, “I’m the last man standing now.” And he closes the album with “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” a more upbeat, folky number that finds him echoing Dylan, declaring “death is not the end.”. It’s a victory lap for sentiment, graft and honesty in a world increasingly bereft of all of the above. Still, Letter to You is, for the most part, a surprisingly personal statement, since it’s unusual to hear one of rock’s most self-actualized voices take stock of what matters to him — his life, family, art, politics, past, and religion — all in real time. Bruce Springsteen - Letter To You (Columbia Records/Sony Music) ★★★★ While recording his critically acclaimed 1978 album Darkness on the Edge … When Springsteen sings about glory days, this time, they’re his own glory days. Three songs are old – one, the excellent If I Was the Priest, so vintage that Springsteen played it at his 1972 audition for Columbia’s A&R John Hammond. He may have released the orchestral-tinged country rock album Western Stars immediately after his autobiography and reflective Broadway engagement, but it’s only now it sounds like he’s looking back through his songwriting. And then there’s “Ghosts,” perhaps the album’s strongest, hardest-rocking homily, in which he sings about hearing “the sound of your guitar comin’ in from the mystic far,” building up the song and detailing the rituals of performing until it explodes as he and the E Street Band sing together, “by the end of the set we leave no one alive.” The song ties together the two main themes of Bruce Springsteen right now — reckoning with formative years and finding salvation in rock & roll — as he sings, “I turn up the volume, let the spirits be my guide,” amid shivering piano and glocks before exploding again. On Letter to You, his 20th studio album, Springsteen examines life from the perspective of a man who’s reached the point where mortality is no longer an abstraction. Summary: Go behind the music as Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band record together live for the first time since Born In The U.S.A. in this intimate documentary that captures reflections on love, loss, and the way music has shaped Bruce Springsteen’s life. Many of the record’s lyrics are introspective, private, and sometimes quixotic — he hides his feelings on “Letter to You” in a way he’d never allow a character on Nebraska get away with — and the only reason some of the songs here don’t feel intimate are because they are literal nods to his past, tracks he wrote in 1972, played once or twice, and retired until now. The only times when he steps out of his own interior are when he seems to be taking metaphorical jabs at Donald Trump. The sentimentality that pulses through Letter to You feels more authentic and personal than the fictional stories he dreamt up in his early work or even his recent dives into nostalgia, like his Magic album. Letter To You provides both a moving thematic adjunct to Springsteen On Broadway and a timely and welcome burst of the sheer euphoria that only the E Street Band can inject. *Letter to You,* his twentieth studio album, faces mortality, and the finality of death, head on, and is in part a fond look backward, evoking friends and bandmates he has lost along the way.
