To say more risks to spoil the story, so I’ll just end this review in saying that in terms of recent kid’s books, Flora and Ulysses ranks way up there with The One and Only Ivan for being a stupendously funny and emotionally fulfilling book! What does Flora's motto ("Don't hope. To see what your friends thought of this book, My eldest read it with no problem in 4th grade and he's got a few learning disability issues. Flora's friend William uses a lot of scientific terminology about space. Good triumphs over evil! The ending was sweet, but felt a bit forced. Flora's mother is a romance writer, always busy trying to meet deadlines, writing what Flora calls "treacle." I think younger people will enjoy it, there is a lot of action and a flying squirrel is fun. It has interesting characters and fun situations. Oh, and her mother ends up the villain of the story. Flora generally exhibits more maturity and a better sense of priorities than her mom, who's excessively concerned about having a "weird" daughter. However, somewhere along the way the story turned and it started to become a bit maudlin and dark. Not much of a story, and if certain characters refrained from repeating themselves or insisting on being called by both a first and a last name every time they are mentioned or spoken to, this book would be many pages briefer.
