St. Peter's Finger (1938) Lament for Leto (rewrite of Come Away, Death; characters different; enjoyable, but minor) 20. The Devil’s Elbow (well-written & competent, but humdrum plot) There is pretty much nothing done with this - nobody shows any interest in his life at all and early suggestions his life will be investigated just don't happen. Fascinating, but flawed) 25. Here Comes a Chopper (1946) Apparently, the victim was blackmailing a money lender. This is one example of having my expectations splintered due to watching the BBC's "Mrs. Bradley Mysteries" before reading this book. 17. Wraiths and Changelings (1978) My Father Sleeps (lots of fun, but confused; self-indulgent at end) (4-) 36. Superb read, but slightly arbitrary murderer? The Mystery of a Butcher’s Shop is the second book in a series which spanned 66 novels featuring Mrs Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley – psychoanalyst and amateur sleuth. Faintley Speaking (1954) I bought a handful of them though, so I'll keep trying. Hangman's Curfew (1941) Death and the Maiden reveals in Gladys' descriptions her ever-present love of the English countryside, in this case the watery reaches of a Hampshire stream; contains a fine cast of eccentric characters; and also benefits from having one of the most eerie dust-wrapper designs. She ends up with a red bearded stranger in an Island of ghosts. This is marvellous. The Echoing Strangers (7, 8 & 9 are pretty interchangeable) Apparently the only person he gets on with is Eleanor who is... the murderer. I let myself get excited about this book because it starts with a dead body belonging to the wrong sex: the explorer Everard Mountjoy was in fact a woman! Nest of Vipers (1979) My Father Sleeps (1944) Historian Alexis Coe's new book, You Never Forget Your First: A Biography of George Washington, arrived in U.S. bookstores in February. Suspects include his quiet (but extremely competent) fiancee Eleanor, pompous Alastair and forceful son Garde, engaged to lovely Dorothy, plus curious natural. Say It with Flowers (1960) 44. (1929) The Mystery of a Butcher's Shop. The Worsted Viper (1943) Also unusual, is the fact that the account is largely told by a female member of Mrs Bradley's extended family, in this case the youthful Hermione: more-often-than-not, Gladys seemed to favour male narrators. Turns out that's not a clue, they're all just arseholes. She manages to flee with a boat but finds another stranger hiding at the boathouse. Winking at the Brim (1974) Ever one for the classical literary allusion, I'm afraid in this case I just couldn't keep pace. 19. The Dancing Druids (again, 18 & 19 are pretty much interchangeable) Cold, Lone and Still (1983) I've tried two in the series. Printer's Error (1939) However, although there is no Miss Marple fluffiness masking a sharp mind, it is clear that she is a very astute lady indeed. Very odd book, which is exactly what I said about the first Michell I read, The Mystery of a Butcher's Shop. The Crozier Pharoahs (1984) Death at the Opera (1934) p. 95. 64 . 15. Death of a Delft Blue (1964) Death of a Delft Blue She is a strong woman capable of making strong men quail in a fight. This was an acknowledgement for her witty and incisive detective stories. This is the 35th book in the series, published in 1962. 64. Tom Brown’s Body (4+) - Much higher? And it could! Masterpiece: Dark Angel (Full UK- Length Edition) DVD, Midsomer Murders: Series 16 DVD & Blu-ray, Dame Diana Rigg stars as witty, glamorous divorcee Adela Bradley in this classic whodunit set in the 1920s. Mrs. Bradley finds a lot of suspects in the case which proves to be challenging. Unfortunately, Mitchell does NOTHING with this premise. The Death-Cap Dancers (1981) Speedy Death is a rather entertaining and fun read, full of plot twists that Mitchell weaves together admirably at the end. The first Mrs. Bradley, and I'm already annoyed that these aren't better known these days. The Dancing Druids (1948) 31 . I have meaning to read a Gladys's Mitchell mystery for some time now but where to find one? Ask a Policeman was a novel by the Detection Club, but since I wasn’t very familiar with all the authors, I didn’t really enjoy the book. 26. The Longer Bodies (1930) It is a new day for The Mikado group who are chosen by Hillmaston School to perform. Gory Dew (1970) Mrs. Bradley is called upon to investigate. This is after her generous offer to finance the production. 9. Gory Dew (1970) The main protagonist, Mrs Bradley, is a very interesting take on the old old nosey hag trope, before Miss Marple enters the crime writing scene. The Saltmarsh Murders (1932) 36. This is the first of her 60+ mysteries featuring Mrs. Bradley who seems to be the polar opposite of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. 22. 50 . A Javelin for Jonah (good setting, but supremely arbitrary murderer) 62 . Everyone tramples over the supposed crime scene and destroys evidence madly in all directions. 2. I find these subjective reviews very interesting to compare and contrast with one's own experience, and how one's favorite can be another's disappointment. Unfortunately, she disappears mid-way through the opening night performance and is later found dead. Except for the One Major Thing, but she alludes pretty freely to that throughout her other stories, so I think if you've read any other Mrs Bradley's, you will take. The Rolls Royce that George and Mrs. Bradley tootle around in is a phenomenal piece of art. The first clue that something is a bit odd around here is that Mountjoy turns out to have been a woman, living as a man - and that everyone in this 1929 novel basically takes this in their stride (indeed it's never really explained or explored), except that all the guests are concerned to try.
