Morton built the Mile High Swinging Bridge and opened the Western North Carolina travel attraction in 1952 after inheriting the Mountain from his grandfather. Thank you for all you did for the state of North Carolina. So, we have been spending quite a bit of time there. I am sad to hear that we lost Mr. Morton. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Morton Family. Hugh Morton first called my camera store in 1969 to order supplies for his passion for photography. One year ago at a chance meeting when my daughter and I had just come back down from a hike of the three peaks of Grandfather, I got to meet Mr. Morton and his grandson at the zoo there. HI,My mother Francis Leigh Laporte grew up with Mr.Morton although she was much younger.She moved there in 1934.Her father William Francis Laporte came down to work for the Huningtons at Brookgreen gardens ect...He later went to work for the shipyard in Wilmington before and during world war11.My sister inherited pictures of my mother I believe to have been taken at Greenfield Park or nearby.I once asked her "Who had taken them",as I was amazed at their quility.She replied"Oh just a neighborhood boy who liked to take pictures".I also have the only known pictures of the adding on of the shipyard before and during ww11,according to the library in Wilmington.Could they have been taken by Mr.Morton?I know the families were friends.I watched Mr.Morton on PBS.I remember meeting him as very young child.To watch him brought tears to my eyes.His dialect,talking with his hands,his thoughts,how it reminded me so of my mother who had passed sometime before.I think it is not only their conservation but the mindset that we as thier children must carry on.That to me is their legacy.
