Welcome to the panic room “Panic Room” is a 2018 single from Ibiza-born indie singer/songwriter Au/Ra.The lyrics deal with anxiety and self-doubt, and the metaphorical “room” that those feelings put people into. The song’s music video depitcts Au/Ra wandering through a dystopian asylum. So I’m glad that I got to do that with “Panic Room.”. I’ve watched a lot of horror movies and I’m kind of a scaredy cat, so actually filming that music video for “Panic Room” was such an intense experience. I feel like this entire song is just such a sad song. I had lots of anxiety, so basically “Panic Room” is kind of based off of that feeling of not really fitting in at school which I feel like a lot of people experience. The lyrics deal with anxiety and self-doubt, and the metaphorical “room” that those feelings put people into. So the way that the song progresses is kind of like talking about basically running away from a monster. Where all your darkest fears are gonna And you end up trapped in this panic room, where you think you’re safe, but actually, you’re your own monster, the fears are coming from you, and you’ve trapped yourself in your own mind. [Chorus] It’s me, I’m the monster!” So if you watch it then you’ll see that that’s kind of the storyline along there. [Outro] And I couldn’t really find a song out there that talked about that, so I was like, “Let me write it!” So that basically just came from my own experiences and so it’s pretty sad. You'll know I wasn't joking So dark. When we wrote “Panic Room,” I had been going through a tough time in high school. It’s so interesting to talk about it though, because in the end, to really help people or try and help them through music, it’s to explain the situations, not really say, “this is how you solve your anxiety.” It’s like, no, if you can listen to something and relate to it, because it’s explaining how you feel, and if you can recognize that’s how you feel, then you automatically know that someone feels like that too. Of course you could be like, “I feel anxious, oh my god, oh my god.” You could totally start off like that, but I was like, “Wait, what is that feeling feel like?” It feels like you’re being chased by something, like you’re being chased by your fears, you’re acting in a way that you don’t want to act, because you’re scared and it’s all these emotions that are coming out and you don’t know what to do with them. A month after the release of the song, British DJ duo CamelPhat remixed the song; the remix features a faster beat and more prominent synthesizers. So the concept behind “Panic Room,” basically, was to write a song about anxiety. Come for you, come for you “Panic Room” is just kind of about that feeling that i feel like a lot of people experience at some point in their lives. The song features slow, subtle synthesizers. But it was weird, ‘cause I had friends, and I was in a friend group, but I always felt a little bit out of place, and I think that was just my character. It was just super cool to be involved in the entire process and really get to explain the story, because I love portraying things as a story.
